About the book:
In the early days of the electrical industry, power had to be distributed as
direct current at a low voltage, so that the distribution circuits were
limited in length by the voltage drop in the lines. The use of electricity
was limited to the few urban areas where a large number of customers
could be served by relatively short distribution circuits. With DC power
the high cost of changing from one voltage to another meant that all
electrical machinery and equipment had to be designed for the same
voltage, an obvious handicap to the use of electricity.
The invention of the power transformer towards the end of the nineteenth
century made possible the development of the modern constant voltage
AC supply system. The relatively low voltage at which power is
generated can be stepped up to a high voltage for transmission to a load
center located a considerable distance away. Power can be generated at
locations best suited for generating plants and economically transmitted
to may loads hundreds of kilometers away. Small towns and rural areas
can tap into a transmission line with transformers to obtain power in a
manner not practical with DC transmission. Any voltage for any
application can be obtained.
